Voodoo Music Fest 10/26 - 10/28

Hi! Me (40) and my husband (42) are traveling to NOLA for the Voodoo Music fest with our 17 y/o son and his friend. We are driving overnight on Wednesday so we should arrive Thursday morning and have all day %26amp; night to check out the city and enjoy it!

The music festival starts Friday around 10am and runs from about 10 til 10 Fri, Sat %26amp; Sunday. We are leaving early Monday morning to drive back to FLA.

Our hotel is the Canal Street Guesthouse which is right on the streetcar line and a little closer to the FQ than to City Park.

What we are looking for is reasonable-priced restuarants to give everyone a good ';taste'; of New Orleans (think $15-$20 OR LESS per person) for dinner and some places that are minor-friendly to take the kids to enjoy some real jazz. Our hotel has a full community kitchen so we can cook there if need be. We want to get muffalatos to take to the show with us for lunches. Any help at all would be appreciated.

I%26#39;ve been scouring these message boards and from all the wonderful suggestions I%26#39;ve been reading this is a tentative Thursday (any suggestions are WELCOME!)

Breakfast: Cafe DuMonde for benigets

Walk around Frenchman, Magazine etc for window shopping

Catch the free ferry ride to Mardi Gras world

Lunch at Central Grocery for muff.

Continue walking tour (suggestions?)

Dinner at Snug Harbor and stay for the jazz

Can anyone help??

Breakfast: Cafe DuMonde for benigets.

Also try Croissant d%26#39;Or at 617 Ursalines between Chartres and Royal.

Walk around Frenchman, Magazine etc for window shopping.

Frenchmen St. is not really for shopping. Magazine St. is a shopper%26#39;s dream. http://www.magazinestreet.com/

Catch the free ferry ride to Mardi Gras world

The free ferry is fun just to ride to Algiers and back. I have not been to Mardis Gras World but I do want to take my kids there.

Lunch at Central Grocery for muff.

Great cold muffs. Napoleon House is good too (warmed muffs) and has a much better atmosphere.

Continue walking tour (suggestions?)

The National Park Service has free tours of the FQ. Get there early (like 8:45 AM) to make sure you get a free ticket. They only take 25 people.

419 Decatur Street, New Orleans

504-589-2636 ext. 1

Open daily 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Closed December 25 and Mardi Gras

Dinner at Snug Harbor and stay for the jazz.

Make sure you call Snug Harbor to see if your son can go to the show since he is under 21.

Preservation Hall is for all ages and has classic Dixieland Jazz.

Palm Court Jazz Cafe has food and live jazz for all ages.

I have walked by the Canal Street Guesthouse and thought it looked fine. That part of Canal St. is not the best part of town so I would not walk around there late at night. The streetcar stop is right by the guesthouse so you should be fine using the streetcar.

The guesthouse is in a really icky part of town, IMHO. The now-closed Grand Palace Hotel is right there. I definitely would stick to cabs at night!

porcupine150: Thank you for your suggestions and help. I%26#39;m taking notes like crazy :))

CajunWave: Would you please offer a little more information. Like icky, is it not going to be safe to park the car there or leave things in the room? We choose the Guesthouse due to the glowing reviews on Trip Advisor, availability that weekend and price. Should we consider losing the $50 deposit and booking somewhere else?

I am assuming the guest house has secure parking. No, I wouldn%26#39;t park a car on the street there. Much of that neighborhood is scheduled to be demolished soon for a new VA/LSU hospital complex and it can%26#39;t happen soon enough. The ';Grand Palace'; is an eyesore indeed.

The guest house gets good reviews. It%26#39;s just the location I don%26#39;t like at all!
