LSU-Florida Weekend

The girlfriend and I got tickets for the LSU-Florida game and will be getting into town early Friday morning (Oct 5th thru 7th). I’m looking for good places to purchase LSU gear and places to have a cold one or many (micro-brews if BR has any). Also any advice on tailgating would be helpful or anything else for that matter since it’s going to be just us two to start with. Gueax Tigers!

LSU-Florida Weekend

Depending on where you are staying, there are many great bars in BR. For the absolute max in selection, go to the Chimes, just outside the north gates of LSU on Highland Rd. If you%26#39;re out east, they have a Chimes on Coursey near Airline Hwy. The Caterie on Perkins has good beer selection, and a magnificent cheesburger. For LSU gear, just go to the Union on campus. They%26#39;re open on gameday and have everything you could ever want. Parking is killer, and for Florida will be insane, so go early, hit the Chimes and get your head right for the game. Geaux Tigers.

Mung; LSU class of %26#39;89 %26amp; %26#39;92.

LSU-Florida Weekend

Thanks Mung, We%26#39;re staying at the Hampton Inn @ I-10 and College so I%26#39;m thinking the Chimes outside the North gates would be better for us. Also does anyone (establishment-wise) provide a shuttle to/fro the game? Some bars in Atlanta have that service for the Braves - very nice. Thanks again for the information.

Chimes is great but you may want to check out Walk-Ons which is newer and closer to the Stadium (southend) on Nicholson Drive. Lots of folks grab food and drink there before the game and then walk down. You shouldn%26#39;t have trouble with tailgating....they will be set up for blocks around the stadium beginning early Saturday morning...some even drive in Friday, especially the motorhomes. If you%26#39;re walking around, looking friendly, usually you%26#39;ll get an invitation or two. Good luck!

Maybe Friday night you two could explore downtown. Many nice bars and restaurants, especially Tsunami on top of the Shaw Center Art Museum across the street from the Old State Capital with a gorgeous view of the Mississippi River.

Check with your hotel about transportation. I%26#39;m not sure what is available.

LSU Union is undergoing extensive remodeling so parking near there may be a problem. There is a sports shop in a small strip shopping area at the intersection of Highland Road at LSU Avenue. Also Co-op Bookstore near Walk-Ons sells LSU stuff as well as Wal-Mart near your hotel on College Drive which sells all the official LSU shirts, hats, etc. at good prices.

Enjoy! Baton Rouge is a fun city and the weather may even be cooler by then.

ILLa, Thanks for the information. It will be put to great use.

The Chimes does have a great selection of beers, but the Mellow Mushroom, just off Highland Road, near the south campus gate, has almost as many to pick from.

Our daughter was a server at Walk Ons and I%26#39;ve eaten there a number of times. In my opinion, the food quality doesn%26#39;t even come close to that of the the Chimes. But, Walk Ons is lots of fun, it%26#39;s much larger than the Chimes, and it will definitely be jumping before and after the game. They%26#39;ll sometimes set up a large tent for a band right next to the building.

The suggestion about downtown is a good one, too. Besides Tsunami, there%26#39;s the Wine Loft, The Roux House (owned by the same guys who own Walk Ons), Happy%26#39;s (also owned by the same guys), and Boudreaux and Thibideaux%26#39;s. The Roux House and Boudreaux and Thibodeaux%26#39;s should have bands on Friday night.

All excellent feedback! I do appreciate it all. The girlfriend and I decided to come in Thursday instead. That%26#39;ll give us two nights for downtown and then settle in for gameday on Sat. Thanks again.

My daughter was a freshman at LSU last year, and now that y%26#39;all are mentioning all these bars/restaurants, I%26#39;m recognizing things that appeared on her check card bill. She%26#39;s having as much fun as I did down there.

Given the crowds on gameday, I would park early and walk around. You can get a Mitchell Omelette for breakfast at Louie%26#39;s, which is around the corner from the Chimes, then start sampling beers at the Chimes. Then stumble across campus over to Walk-Ons, by which times you will have created some room for more beers, assuming you don%26#39;t sample any tailgating in between.

Those are all great suggestions. One last one for your list.....since you asked (from the Business Report posted today): Shuttle buses will once again run from downtown to LSU on football game days. Downtown Development District officials say they are pleased to have an agreement in place well in advance of the opening home game against Virginia Tech, since they had to scramble for private support after LSU dropped the subsidized service right before the 2006 football season kicked off. Tickets for the round-trip service are $10 and they can be purchased in advance at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center and the Sheraton Baton Rouge Convention Center. The buses will depart from the North Boulevard bus shelter and the side of the Sheraton, beginning three hours before kickoff. Davis Rhorer, DDD executive director, says plans are to have buses leaving downtown every 30 minutes. Brace Godfrey, a member of the DDD commission, says he hopes the bus service can lead to game day activities downtown, such as concerts or live radio remotes.

I hope you have a great time..........and go Tigers!

Jazz, while in Baton Rouge earlier this week, visiting with our daughter, we passed in front of the Hilton, after leaving the Wine Loft. She commented on the shuttles from downtown to the game, saying she had heard that they would not be express shuttles, and that they would have to contend with game traffic, just like everyone else. Have you heard anything different?

For Friday night downtown, check out Live After Five. Outdoor concerts downtown, from 5-7ish. Walking distance to Tsunami and various bars, so it%26#39;s a good start to a Friday night.
