vegetarian in NOLA -and YES, i've already searched the forum

I know I%26#39;m in the wrong city for good vegetarian food, but can anyone suggest some restaurants that will have a nice meat-free selection? The last time I went it was with a meat-eating friend and I stuck it out by carbo-loading(beignets, bread, sweet potatoes, alcohiol). But this time (in four days) I%26#39;m travelling with my veggie sister-in-law (ever try ordering Muffalletta without meat? ha ha) If not...I can always resort to the ol%26#39; ';liquid diet'; that I%26#39;ve come to love NoLa for :o)

Here are a couple of reviews from Zagat%26#39;s:

A “welcoming” BYO with “memorable nonalcoholic drinks”, this “authentic” “mom-and-pop” West African in the “quiet part of the Quarter” is the place to go for “delicious”, “simple” dishes, like jambalaya-stuffed trout, baked chicken with coconut rice and a number of vegetarian choices that “let the fresh ingredients do the talking”; the “hearty meals at low prices” make up for “slow” service.

Mid-City citizens appreciate the “veg”-friendly “variety” at this “dependable” cafe that brings together “pizzas and lavosh wraps to die for” among other Mediterranean eats; its humble cafe setting is enhanced by sidewalk seating and proximity to the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Classic diner” meets “crunchy vegetarian” at this “offbeat” Garden District hangout where “stick-to-your-ribs” breakfasts and quirky plate lunches served by “tattooed waitresses” satisfy sleepy souls “in their jammies”; most agree it’s a “hangover helper” that’s hardly “slimming”, but just right after a “late night out.”

Most of the upscale places will gladly make something for you upon request as I am sure you know. Most of what I have listed are causal local places. Obviously Italian, mexican options etc can usually do something. Hope this helps.

Bayona

Although not on the menu the chef (susan spicer) will do something special and its always great.

I would recommend you not visit Bennachin. It%26#39;s pretty bad, both in service and food. We don%26#39;t have a lot of African cuisine in New Orleans and it%26#39;s too bad this place isn%26#39;t better.

Mona Lisa, right next door, does some great vegetarian calzones and pizzas.

I posted a list of vegetarian restaurants a few months ago. I%26#39;ll see if I can find that post.

No personal experience with any of these, but I%26#39;ve found them on various vegetarian restaurant lists:

Lebanon Cafe on S. Carrollton is excellent. My vegetarian daughter enjoyed it, and my lamb-eating husband did, too.

There%26#39;s another site I%26#39;ve used that lists vegan restaurants in New Orleans. Because of the rough language I didn%26#39;t give the site to my daughter, but here%26#39;s a way to find the info.

I%26#39;m not a vegan, but I eat no meat, or fish. I eat eggs and cheese. I found that every restaurant I went to catered to my needs.. They made beautiful pasta dishes for me. The praline connection said';don%26#39;t worry , your%26#39;e in good hands';. They made me a veg. rice a bean dish, and sides. Excellent. The gumbo shop does a veg. rice and beans and a veg. gumbo. I never had one problem eating, and didn%26#39;t have to do the side dish thing.

We were there in Augsut and I loved the Gumbo Shop.

They really have only one vegetarian dish each night but it was great! We went a couple of times.

Enjoy!

New Orleans is a great city!

At the Gumbo shop, it is a different bean and rice dish daily, but the veg. gumbo is done daily, I believe. P.S. I love their bread pudding, so I leave over some of my food to leave room for dessert. (lol)
